The Three Levels of a Sleep Study

Level 1: In-Lab Sleep Study

A level 1 sleep study is conducted in a sleep laboratory and is overseen by technicians throughout the duration of the study. This is the best study to assess and pride the best signals

Sleep Study measurements

A sleep study measures a range of information including:

  • Body oxygen level through the finger with an ‘oximeter’
  • Airflow through the nose by pressure change
  • Chest and abdomen movements
  • Heart activity also known as electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Brain activity also known as electroencephalogram (EEG)
  • Muscle activity also known as electromyogram (EMG)
  • Eye activity also known as electrooculogram (EOG)

Level 2: Home Based Sleep Study

A level 2 study is an at-home sleep study and is not monitored by a technician throughout the night. We have endeavored to make this as good as the in-lab study but without technician surveillance there are bound to be failures. Unfortunately, most pharmacy studies are not up to this standard and can only rule-in the diagnosis.

Level 3: Screening Test Only

This is with oxygen levels and cannula flow only. Can only be considered a screening test for the real studies with only nasal pressure and oximetry being measured. These are not recommended by Mid Coast Sleep.

Treatment Options

CPAP/APAP Devices

CPAP/APAP devices are commonly used to treat sleep apnea by providing a continuous or adjustable air pressure to keep the airway open during sleep.

Non CPAP Devices

Oral appliances and positional therapy are non-CPAP devices that can be used to treat sleep apnea by repositioning the jaw or body to prevent airway blockages during sleep.

Surgery

Surgery may be recommended if other treatments have failed, and may involve removing excess tissue, repositioning the jaw, or inserting implants to help keep the airway open during sleep.

Because many people suffering from OSA are often also carrying some excess body weight, considering dietary changes can also be helpful in those cases.

It is worth noting that there are a range of questionable devices and supplements that are on the market, claiming to stop snoring and addressing OSA. Most of these are ‘snake oil’ remedies, and a waste of money.

CPAP Servicing/Repair

Snore on Morton now offers CPAP servicing and repairs if your CPAP is not performing as it once did. We also offer download and consultation, which can assess your therapy effectiveness. We can perform downloads on a range of machines including ResMed, Fisher and Paykel, DeVilbiss, Transcend and BMC. In many cases, your CPAP may just require download and refinement of settings.

CPAP Hire

We understand sometimes you may need to trial or hire a device, reasons can include repair of your own, forgetting your device when on a holiday or simply wishing to trial a modern device when considering upgrade. We offer an affordable rate and have different brands and models to suit individual needs.

Mask Trial

We strongly encourage trial of a mask prior to purchase. This gives you the opportunity to be confident in your choice, or the option to trial multiple until you find the right fit.
